NYX Total Control Drop Foundation Review

NYX Cosmetics continues to be very popular for high quality makeup in great shades at a low price. NYX has rolled out quite a few new products for 2017 and the Total Control Drop Foundation is creating a lot of fans very quickly. Most customer reviews and professional reviews rate Total Control Drop Foundation highly.NYX Total Control Makeup Review

What is Drop Foundation?

Total Control is called a drop foundation because it comes with an eye dropper used to dispense the product. I think this is just gimmick since it gives little additional control over the amount of foundation dispensed compared to just getting it directly from the bottle onto your finger. The idea is that you can use a couple of drops for a light finish, more drops for heavier coverage. I find this method of dispensing makeup to be messy as foundation gets gooped up around the neck of the bottle, but this isn’t a reason to dismiss the product.

Total Control Drop Foundation Shades, Coverage and Cost

Total Control Drop Foundation comes in 24 shades, making it easier to find a match for your skin tone, from the fairest to the deepest. While I didn’t get truly full coverage, the coverage is from light to medium-full while still looking natural. If you have freckles or acne scarring, your skin will look beautiful with this foundation while freckling or scarring is lightened significantly. If you want to add spot covering to this foundation, get NYX’s Gotcha Covered concealer. This stuff comes in 20 shades for a perfect match, it covers completely and a little goes a long way. If you have any creases around your eyes, it won’t settle in. I am currently using a very pricey concealer from IT Cosmetics because I am testing the line and the only differences I can see are that the NYX Gotcha Covered concealer is a bit more matte, and it’s slightly sheerer less pigmented, requiring just a tad more product for the same coverage.

While NYX does not specify that this is a long wearing foundation, most users find that it has enough staying power to last all day. I recommend using Revlon’s Colorstay pressed powder to finish and help the foundation to last. NYX’s own Blotting Powder is another good selection, but there are only four shades, most too pink or too warm. If you want to go high end with finishing powder, try Tarte Smooth Operator.

Total Control Drop Foundation retails for $14 on the NYX website (45 day return policy) or buy from Ulta online or in stores (60 day returns). The size is .43 oz, which isn’t a lot of makeup. Compare that to Revlon Color Stay foundation, which lasts all day and then some plus offers great full coverage at around $12 an ounce.  However, Color Stay can’t easily be built on for more coverage as Total Drop Foundation can.

The Take Away:

If you’re in the market for a new foundation with some coverage versatility and good staying power, give NYX Total Control Drop Foundation a try.
