Walmart Grocery Pickup Review
I did not plan to write a Walmart Grocery review. I was pretty sure I would never use the service. The concept of ordering groceries online and picking them up without leaving my car sounded great, but I had concerns. I wondered if Walmart grocery pickers would be as selective with the quality of the produce and if I would be stuck in a long line waiting to receive my order.
Then, my commitments built to monumental proportions one week, so I decided to give Walmart Grocery pick up a shot. I now use the service regularly and I’m sharing my experience with Walmart Grocery Pickup.
How to Buy Groceries to Pick Up at Walmart
I ordered my groceries in the morning for my first online grocery pickup, then swung by the Walmart store to pick them up later in the day after an appointment. I used Walmart’s website to place my order the first time. Now, I use the Grocery app for Android/iPhone to order as well as the website. You’ll want the mobile Walmart Grocery app so you can let Walmart employees know where you’re parked when you pick up.
- Choose a one-hour window to pick up your groceries
- Select groceries
- Choose payment method
- Complete the purchase
- First time shoppers get $10 off with my Walmart Grocery promo code
Picking Up Groceries at Walmart
I felt a little wary about how picking up my groceries at Walmart would work. Turns out it’s super-easy. The first time I used the service the employee delivering groceries to my car carefully explained how everything works. I inspected produce before accepting the order.
- Receive a text when your grocery order is ready.
- Click the link in the text message when you are on your way to the store and allow access to your location. Walmart employees will know you are on your way.
- Follow the clearly marked orange signs to the Walmart Grocery parking lot.
- Pull into the pickup area and enter your stall number and vehicle color on the app.
- An employee brings the groceries to your vehicle. If there were any substitutions for products (more on that in a minute), the employee ensures you are happy with them.
- Sign for groceries and the employee loads them into your car.
Tips for Using Walmart Grocery
Wait Time: I’ve waited anywhere from two to eight minutes to pick up my grocery order. Except for one day when Walmart didn’t compensate for absent employees and it took 18 minutes for the order to come to my vehicle. This is the exception to the rule and I let Walmart know my thoughts on the matter. The bottom line is I would have been in Walmart doing my own shopping for at least an hour, so I still saved time.
Time Slots: The one-hour pickup windows get reserved quickly at my local Walmart. This may differ where you live. I either order my groceries the night before to get the slot I want the next day, or I order before 10 a.m. to pick up mid-afternoon. Evening time slots are often available, and you won’t wait long if you can take one of these.
Tips and Service Fees: There’s no tipping Walmart Grocery employees. I engage in some cheerful banter with them, though. I appreciate the work they do. Walmart Grocery is a free service with no personal shopper fees.
Substitutions: If the store is out of an item on your order, the employee will automatically select a product of the same or better quality or a larger size. You only pay the price of the original product. The employee will tell you about any substitutions before loading your car. You can reject the substitutions and they’ll be removed from the order.
Everything goes quicker if you just uncheck the box next to any items you don’t want to be substituted when you check out online or in the Walmart Grocery app. The employee will tell you if any groceries are missing from the order. You only pay for what you get.
Pick Up Earlier in Your Window: I find when I arrive at Walmart early in the one-hour pickup window that I wait for less time than if I pick up later. It seems like orders are delivered honoring the time window, so you won’t be penalized by shoppers trying to pick up before their window starts. I have noticed I generally wait under five minutes for my order when I arrive early. Your results may vary.
Saving Money with Walmart Grocery
Walmart Grocery is now part of my weekly routine. Not only do I save time with the service, but I save money. If you tend to buy things that catch your eye that weren’t on your grocery list like I do, services like Walmart Grocery put a stop to those impulse buys.
Some credit cards offer deals on Walmart Grocery orders. Discover Card has a 5% cash back bonus right now for using either the Grocery app or ordering groceries online. Rakuten (formerly known as Ebates) often has cashback deals for ordering from Walmart.com.
By the way, that link to Rakuten will net you $10 off your first order at any store in the app (and I’ll get a referral fee). You can read my Rakuten Ebates review here.
Do I Recommend Walmart Grocery?
Like I said at the beginning, I didn’t think I would be writing a Walmart Grocery review. The service makes sense when you need the convenience of shopping familiar items with a quick pick up.
Each step of the process for using Walmart Grocery is convenient. Sometimes I just hate grocery shopping. I read in my car, call my mom or browse social media while I wait a few minutes to pick up the groceries and avoid the aisles.
